G7 Leaders Recognise Quantum Technologies as Strategic Global Priority

Kananaskis, Canada – June 2025
At the conclusion of this year’s G7 Summit, hosted in Kananaskis under Canada’s 2025 G7 Presidency, leaders of the world’s seven largest advanced economies and the European Union released a joint statement recognising quantum technologies as a shared strategic priority.

This marks a historic moment: for the first time, quantum has been formally included on the G7 Leaders’ agenda.

Titled the G7 Leaders’ Kananaskis Common Vision for the Future of Quantum Technologies, the statement sends a clear and powerful signal, quantum technologies are no longer viewed as distant possibilities but as present-day priorities for economic resilience, national security, and long-term innovation.

A Shared Vision, Shaped by Global Industry Advocacy

This G7 statement follows a concerted effort by members of the International Council of Quantum Industry Associations (ICQIA), a global network of quantum industry bodies.

In Autumn 2024, ICQIA members, including QuIC, co-authored a letter to the Prime Minister of Canada, calling for quantum to be prioritised during Canada’s G7 Presidency.

The letter urged G7 Leaders to act on several core industry priorities, including:

  • Strengthening public-private collaboration

  • Supporting start-ups and SMEs

  • Promoting workforce development

  • Securing critical quantum supply chains

  • Advancing responsible innovation and global coordination

  • Adopting quantum-resilient security solutions

  • Anchoring innovation in shared democratic values

That advocacy has borne fruit. The language and priorities now reflected in the G7 statement closely align with the strategic recommendations made in the ICQIA letter.

A Defining Moment for Europe and the Global Quantum Community

As a founding member of ICQIA, QuIC is proud to have played a role in elevating the voice of the European quantum industry to the highest levels of international policy.

This recognition comes at a crucial time. In 2025, declared the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, the spotlight is firmly on the industrialisation and deployment of quantum systems.

It also coincides with QUANTUM NOW, a major global gathering of quantum leaders held this week in Montréal, which further reflects the growing urgency around quantum innovation, commercialisation, and global alignment.

Looking Ahead

The inclusion of quantum technologies in the G7’s strategic agenda represents more than symbolic recognition; it sets a precedent for long-term political commitment, international cooperation, and industry-driven impact.

As Europe continues its own strategic development with the upcoming EU Quantum Strategy and the expected European Quantum Act, this global alignment presents a valuable opportunity for coordination and shared progress.

QuIC remains committed to working with its members, partners, and international peers to ensure that Europe’s quantum ecosystem continues to thrive delivering economic value, societal benefit, and technological sovereignty.
