QC Next – Development of a modular software stack for the commercial application of quantum computers (satellite projects)

QC Next – Development of a modular software stack for the commercial application of quantum computers (satellite projects)” published today. As the DLR Projektträger, they are implementing this call on behalf of the “Development of Digital Technologies” department of the BMFTR (formerly BMWE).

The aim of the call is to develop a modular software stack with different abstraction layers, open interfaces and suitable process models based on the results of the “QC Next innovation concept“. This should enable QC solutions to be systematically developed and easily integrated into existing industrial processes so that user companies can quickly gain practical experience with quantum computing and benefit from value creation potential.

A flagship project, which is expected to start in December 2025, will develop a reference architecture for an open and modular software stack. The satellite projects addressed in today’s call are intended to validate and supplement this software stack in close collaboration with the flagship project. In particular, the following three topics will be addressed

  1. development of process and engineering models for suitable use cases
  2. expansion of the software stack to include software modules and abstractions between hardware control and application, including cross-layer concerns
  3. connection of quantum computing to currently established industrial software and processes

A first version of a reference architecture with open interfaces should be available at the start of the satellite projects. The call is open to all sectors and technologies and all projects should be pursued with a commercial interest.

Key data on the funding call:

Total funding of approx. €24 million (subject to budget situation)

Indicative values: consortia of 3-6 partners, funding amount €2-5 million per project

Start of the projects in September 2026, max. 36 months duration

Outline submission via link https://ptoutline.eu/app/qc-2 possible until 12.12., 12 noon.
